Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus)
Project for the recovery of the bearded vulture in the Upper Tagus and Serrania de Cuenca.
2018
Study of the quality and suitability of the habitat for the recovery of the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) in Alto Tajo and SerranĂa de Cuenca.
Goal: The bearded vulture, the only osteopathic bird of prey in the world, is the only one of the four Iberian vultures that is now extinct in Castile-La Mancha. It used to inhabit all the Iberian mountain ranges and is currently the object of a great effort to recover its populations beyond the Pyrenees - the only mountain range where the last Iberian specimens took refuge. Along these lines, this project has been set up to enable the bearded vulture to fly again over the skies of the Upper Tagus and Serrania of Cuenca - from where it should have disappeared in the middle of the last century - the first phase of which, the study of the suitability and quality of the habitat, has shown exceptional conditions for the species.
